Martha Atienza: Community Engagement
By Jennifer Baum Lagdameo
It seems quite natural that Martha Atienza would have a deep fascination with the maritime. Born to a Filipino sea captain father and a Dutch mother who worked in the shipping industry, the multimedia artist grew up on the waters of the Netherlands and the Philippines. Today, water remains a central element in her work. The first time I met Atienza, in May 2015, she had come from her home on Bantayan Island off the coast of Cebu, to spend three months in Manila preparing for her solo show at Silverlens gallery, “Study in Reality No. 3.” The artist has been shuttling between “The Island,” as she lovingly refers to Bantayan, and Rotterdam since 2009, with assorted residencies and travels in between. “I have a hard time deciding between the two,” she confessed. “That is why I am so comfortable on ships, I think—being in between, being nowhere.”
