Borders of the Mind . . .

EDITOR'S LETTER

With a conceptual base in the broadly defined region of Asia Pacific, unsurprisingly Art AsiaPacific presents the constant collision of cultures with one another, often blurring the lines of definition around any given particular culture. For example, an article on Shin-ichi Arai's performance art, featured in our last issue, looked at an artist whose every move is a counterpoint to the nationalist urges of his birthplace, Japan. Like Arai, whose art is grounded in artistic traditions linked to Austrian actionists and the Japanese artists of the Gutai group in the 1960s, Art AsiaPacific looks to mix issues, cultures and art forms across time. In a prelude to the coming Gwangju Biennale, Iris Moon talked about divergent views on the east-west axis, clearly a border of the mind.
