Awards: Sharing the Love

International prizes were still awarded despite the pandemic. The inaugural edition of the biannual, HKD 500,000 (USD 64,500) M+ Sigg Prize for artists from greater China was awarded to Hong Kong artist Samson Young for his 12-channel audio-visual installation Muted Situations #22: Muted Tchaikovsky’s 5th (2018). Hong Kong professor Jeffrey Shaw was honored with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)’s SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art. The Sovereign Asian Art Prize, based in Hong Kong, went to Australian artist Alex Seton for his marble replica of a boat engine, Oilstone 05_Corrosion (2019). Prix Ars Electronica awarded its Golden Nica for Digital Communities to Hong Kong protesters, in a proposal from curators Eric Siu and Joel Kwong. Leelee Chan was selected as the ninth winner of the BMW Art Journey to pursue research into artisan practices.
