Based in the Fo Tan industrial area of Hong Kong, sculptor Jaffa Lam is inspired by the laborers of Hong Kong as well as the stories and forms of Chinese art. For more than a decade she has collaborated with former garment workers on creating colorful canopies patched together from recycled umbrella fabric as a means of creating a micro economy through her art projects. Her latest large-scale installation, Trolley Party (2023), created for the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong in 2023, celebrates the many laborers whose efforts happen behind the scenes. In this video, ArtAsiaPacific visits Lam’s studio as she’s finalizing the project. We also revisit her recent exhibition in Hong Kong at Axel Vervoordt gallery as well as her long engagement with women workers and the iconic metal trolley.
