Hong Kong Baptist University’s Academy of Visual Arts Presents Its 2023 Graduation Show

The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) proudly presents “and they still move,” the 16th Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Visual Arts Graduation Exhibition from June 2 to 25, 2023. Following an intensive four-year program at AVA, more than 130 graduating students will present their artworks at the Kai Tak Campus near Choi Hung.

“and still they move” is a nod to the persistent nature of the graduating artists. Through a wide range of artistic mediums, each student’s artwork carries their will and unwavering determination against today’s ever-changing environment. Each artist’s individuality shines through a finely curated exhibition at the former Royal Air Force Officers’ Mess, a historic building in Hong Kong where time and space converge.

Graduates in recent years have undoubtedly experienced a path full of uncertainty. They each formed their distinctive artistic voices amid large-scale social changes and the pandemic. All these experiences have shaped a generation of young and emerging artists who respond to the changing world through unique, uncompromising, and innovative visual languages and unprecedented creative practices.

Diverse yet connected, adaptable yet unbowed, consumed yet enthused—all of these characteristics capture the essence of the exhibition and its artists. Each graduating student carefully navigates the space given by the contradictory forces in the world and carves out their path. “and still they move” is akin to a flashlight, defining new paths and guiding transformative journeys, both in artistic production and theory.

With Covid-19 restrictions lifted in Hong Kong, the annual BA Graduation Exhibition at AVA is anticipated to return to its traditions: a month-long exhibition with programs and events such as artist talks, a flea market, and workshops. June will be a highly anticipated month at HKBU’s Kai Tak Campus for visitors, students, and alumni to reconnect.
