Satpreet Kahlon Wins 2024 Foundwork Artist Prize

The Los Angeles-based nonprofit Foundwork has awarded its 2024 Foundwork Artist Prize to Punjabi-born, New York-based artist, organizer, and educator Satpreet Kahlon. An international five-person jury comprising notable art professionals—Rachel Uffner, Olivia Aherne, Monsieur Zohore, Mohamed Almusibli, and Lorraine Kiang—selected Kahlon for her “ability to weave together salvaged materials, immersive installations, and thoughtful narratives” throughout her practice. As the winning artist, Kahlon will receive an unrestricted USD 10,000 cash prize as well as studio visits with each of the jury members.  Now in its sixth year, the annual prize was established to support emerging and mid-career artists, and to foster global artistic discourse.

Winners Named for of Ninth Asia Arts Game Changer Awards India 

The Asia Society India Centre has announced the four winners of its ninth annual Asia Arts Game Changer Awards India, which will be presented on February 7 in New Delhi during the India Art Fair. Mandi-based printmaker Anupam Sud will receive the Asia Arts Vanguard Award, dedicated to senior artists who have influenced generations of visual arts practitioners in India. Mumbai-born conceptual artist Shilpa Gupta—who is known for examining the social and psychological borders in public life throughout her work—clinched the Asia Arts Pathbreaker Award which recognizes established contemporary artists from India. The Asia Arts Future Award (India) for emerging Indian talents will go to Jayeeta Chatterjee, whose practice blends printmaking, textiles, and the traditional Nakshi Kantha embroidery of Bengal to explore women’s experiences in domestic spaces. Meanwhile, the “anti-institutional” artist collective Karachi LaJamia received the Asia Arts Future Award (South Asia) for their research-driven and experimental art projects that investigate militarism, climate crisis, and indigenous dispossession in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city.

Expo Chicago Reveals 2025 Exhibitors and Partnership with Galleries Association of Korea

Expo Chicago has announced the full list of exhibitors taking part in its 2025 edition. Slated to run from April 24–27 at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, the fair will feature more than 170 galleries from 36 countries. Marking the event’s second year under the ownership of the global contemporary art organization Frieze, the upcoming edition introduces a new partnership with the Galleries Association of Korea (Gaok), bringing 20 Korean galleries to Chicago. “We are proud to expand on new initiatives, including a significant collaboration with the Galleries Association of Korea, made possible through Frieze’s global reach,” said Kristell Chadé, executive director of Frieze fairs. Citing the successful cooperation between KIAF and Frieze Seoul, Gaok president Hwang Dalseung described the partnership as “a new model of win-win through fair-to-fair collaboration in the contemporary art market” and “the first step towards the internationalization of Korean art distribution with Expo Chicago.”

Istanbul’s Dirimart Gallery Announces First International Expansion 

Istanbul-based gallery Dirimart has announced the launch of a new two-story gallery space in London’s Mayfair district, marking its first expansion outside Turkey. Set to open later this year, the gallery will support emerging artists with ties to Turkey while exploring intergenerational exchange, regional and international diversity, and global collaboration. Founded by Hazer Özil in 2002, Dirimart has two existing venues in Istanbul representing Turkish artists—including Ayşe Erkmen, İnci Eviner, Sarkis, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan—as well as international figures such as Shirin Neshat, Sarah Morris, and Tomokazu Matsuyama. In a press release, Özil stated: “Opening the London space represents a bold step forward in advancing our international aspirations,” adding that “our aim has always been to create cross-geographical dialogues . . . [and] we are excited to build on this legacy, presenting fresh exhibitions and ambitious projects that connect our artists with the city’s dynamic art scene and its diverse and engaged audience.”

London’s JD Malat Gallery Launches First Middle East Outpost 

On January 29, London’s JD Malat Gallery opened its first outpost in the Middle East. Located in Dubai’s downtown Opera District, the 1,700-square-meter gallery’s opening reflects the city’s expanding art scene. With a strong focus on community, JD Malat Gallery will promote engagement with artists by collaborating with local art institutions and projects. In a press release, French art dealer and the gallery’s founder Jean-David Malat stated: “Being centrally located in downtown Dubai supports the gallery’s ethos of engaging beyond the gallery space to promote artistic progression and cultural interaction.” The inaugural exhibition at the new venue will feature 14 international artists—Kojo Marfo, Conrad Jon Godly, Santiago Parra, Henrik Uldalen, Ed Moses, Andy Moses, Luis Olaso, Ur Kasin, Tim Kent, Sophie-Yen Bretez, Georg Òskar, Masayoshi Nojo, Katrin Fridriks, and Yann Leto.
