On March 18, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston, Massachusetts, announced Sarah Sze as the winner of its inaugural Meraki Artist Award, which honors the accomplishments of women artists and their impact on the field of contemporary visual art.

The annual USD 100,000 Meraki Award is funded by art collector Fotene Demoulas, who has pledged to sponsor it over the next decade.

Sze is a multidisciplinary artist whose works blend the physical with the digital to explore the delicate nature of time, materiality, and space. Her practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, and installation.

In a statement, Sze expressed her gratitude: “It’s a huge honor to be the first recipient of the Meraki Artist Award and I’m inspired by the dedication to love, care, and art that the award stands for.”

ICA Boston director Jill Medvedow noted in a press release that “the generosity of this award is echoed in the open spirit and artistic expansiveness of Sarah’s work,” adding that “we are thrilled . . . to celebrate her important contributions to art and culture.”

The award will be presented to Sze at the ICA Boston’s annual Women’s Luncheon on May 5.
