Recipients of the 2017 Sesc_Videobrasil Awards Announced

On October 8, Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil presented nine new-media artists with three types of awards for its 20th edition.
The special prize of BRL 25,000 (USD 7,900) granted by the Ostrovsky Family Fund was awarded to Brazilian artist Jaime Lauriano for his “most innovative moving image” artworks, Morte Súbita and O Brasil (both 2014).
Three Sesc Art Collection Acquisition Awards, which grant each winner a cash prize of BRL 25,000 (USD 7,900), went to Bárbara Wagner (Brazil) and Benjamin de Burca (Germany) for their jointly created video work Faz Que Vai (2015), Filipa César (Portugal/Germany) for Transmission from the Liberated Zones (2015) and Quy Minh Truong (Vietnam) for Vuon Bau Xanh Tuoi (2016). Their works will be acquired by the Sesc Art Collection.
The artist residency awards went to five promising artists, offering each individual an opportunity to participate in a two-month residency program at one of the Festival’s partner institutions located around the world. Selected awardees included: Graziela Kunsch (Brazil), who will be stationed at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Poland; Engel Leonardo (Dominican Republic) will spend time at the Kyoto Art Center in Japan; La Decanatura (Colombia) will visit Pro Helvetia in Switzerland; Emo de Medeiros (France/Benin) will complete his residency at Goethe-Institut Residência Vila Sul in Brazil; and Natasha Mendonca (India) will further her practice at Wexner Center for the Arts in the United States. Andrés Padilla Domene (Mexico) received an honorable mention for his video work Ciudad Maya (2016).
Sesc_Videobrasil will run until January 14, 2018, at SESC Pompéia, São Paulo.
