Permanent teamLab Installation Destined To Go Nowhere

Interdisciplinary tech-art collective teamLab will launch a permanent exhibition in the new digital-art complex Nowhere, slated to open in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 2024.
The exhibition will feature iterations of teamLab’s renowned immersive and interactive projects, including “Future Park,” which the collective describes in their statement on Nowhere’s website as “an educational project” that fosters collaborative creation, as well as “Athletics Forest,” which is designed to develop spatial awareness. “Everything exists in a fragile yet miraculous continuity over an extremely long period of time,” teamLab remarked. The exhibition at Nowhere “aims to create an experience through which visitors recognize this continuity itself as beautiful, thereby changing or increasing the ways in which humans perceive the world.”
The teamLab presentation is the first to be announced for the new 3,000-square-meter art space, which will be housed in the Wonderwoods mixed-use development next to Utrecht’s Central Station. According to Nowhere’s founder and director, Jeroen van Mastrigt, “The Netherlands is a country with a high digital awareness, and thus makes it the perfect base for digital art collectives and exhibitions. Nowhere will make the future accessible, engaging and fun to a broad audience.”
The Japanese collective opened their first permanent exhibition space in Tokyo to much fanfare in June 2018. The 10,000-square-meter Mori Building Digital Art Museum: teamLab Borderless attracted 2.3 million visitors in its inaugural year. Borderless expanded to a permanent space in Shanghai in November 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the planned 2020 first-quarter opening of the 5,000-square-meter teamLab SuperNature Macao; it launched in June at the hotel and casino complex The Venetian.
