On July 4, the TarraWarra Museum of Art announced the appointment of Nina Miall as the curator for the 7th TarraWarra Biennial, slated to open in August 2020. Miall is a Sydney-based independent curator and writer who has curated over 30 exhibitions across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States.
Victoria Lynn, director of the TarraWarra Museum of Art, referred to Miall’s extensive curatorial experience in her statement on the appointment, commenting that “the wealth of [Miall’s] experience speaks to TarraWarra Museum of Art’s desire to present Australian art in a global context” and is thus a testament to the Museum’s dedication to “art as a world-making activity.” Lynn also added: “Undoubtedly, Miall will test the biennial format whilst observing TarraWarra’s commitment to art, place and ideas.”
Miall’s curatorial experience includes a five-year stint at Carriageworks (2012–17), where she notably co-curated “The National 2017: New Australian Art” as well as “24 Frames Per Second” (2012–15), a project focused on commissioning multidisciplinary experimental work by Australian and international artists. Her work in the field also includes three years as director of Singapore-based gallery Future Perfect (2012–15); five years as director of the London gallery Haunch of Venison (2006–11); and two years as head of public programs for the Royal Academy of Arts in London (2003–05).
The TarraWarra Biennial was established in 2006 as a platform dedicated to the promotion of innovative, contemporary Australian art. Emily Cormack, currently public art curator at Burwood Brickworks, curated the previous TarraWarra Biennial, titled “From Will to Form,” in 2018.
