On October 10, Hong Kong’s M+ museum announced the six shortlisted artists for the third edition of its biennial Sigg Prize. The nominees are: Shanghai-based multimedia artist Bi Rongrong; Macau-born ceramicist Heidi Lau; Singaporean artist Ho Rui An; Taiwanese artist and filmmaker Hsu Chia-Wei; Berlin-based composer and performance artist Pan Daijing; and Hong Kong multidisciplinary artist Wong Ping. Each finalist will receive HKD 100,000 (USD 12,870) to support their future art projects.

A six-person jury panel selected the shortlist out of 30 nominees in a meeting chaired by M+ director Suhanya Raffel. The jury was composed of international art figures such as Maria Balshaw, director of the Tate museums in London; Gong Yan, director of the Power of Station of Art in Shanghai; Mami Kataoka, director of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum; Glenn D. Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Chinese artist Xu Bing; and Uli Sigg, the Swiss art collector whom the prize is named after.

The finalists were chosen for their practices’ exploration of power and culture, as well as time, space, and tradition in modern life through various media and concepts. Raffel stated in a press release that the selected artists “embody innovation and creativity, pushing boundaries that enrich the contemporary art landscape and spark intellectual discourse while reshaping artistic conventions.”

Established in 2018, the Sigg Prize aims to establish an international platform for artists born or based in the Greater China region and its diasporas. The jury will reconvene in Hong Kong in December 2025 to name the winning artist, who will be awarded a grand cash prize of HKD 500,000 (USD 64,360).

All six shortlisted artists will showcase their work in the Sigg Prize 2025 exhibition at M+, which is set to open in September next year.
