Shaped like a swan or a ship ready to set sail, the newly opened Bai’etan Greater Bay Area Art Centre in Guangzhou is the new home of the Guangdong Museum of Art, along with the Guangdong Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Centre and the Guangdong Literature Museum. The museum complex officially opened on May 1, following an inauguration ceremony and drone show on April 28.
Designed by He Jingtang, from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a team from the South China University of Technology, the Bai’etan Greater Bay Area Art Centre is located across from Shamian island in the Liwan district of Guangzhou. It reaches 78.5 meters in height, 350 meters in length, with 11 floors above ground and two underground.
The Guangdong Museum of Art reopened with eight exhibitions including a survey of early 20th century Chinese art, a postwar survey, an exhibition focused on Pearl River Delta artists, as well as surveys of contemporary art on view through October 31. The museum is also hosting a survey of highlights from the Galleria Borghese until September 7.
