Sydney’s 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art—an artist initiative founded in 1996 that focuses on cultivating Asian and Australian cultural relations—has elected Edmund Capon as its new Chair of the Board.

A London native, Capon brings with him 33 years of arts experience gained while working at Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, where he has been director and chief curator since 1978.

An influential Chinese scholar, Capon has authored numerous publications dealing with art from the Asia-Pacific region including Art and Archaeology in China (1977) and Qin Shihuang: Terracotta Warriors and Horses (1982).

In 1994, Capon was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia and awarded a centenary medal for his services to Australian society and the arts in 2001. He recently hosted a three-part television series The Art of Australia (2013), which traces the history and culture of Australia.
