On July 18, Daisuke Tsuda was announced as the artistic director of the 2019 edition of the Aichi Triennale. The triennial will be held in Nagoya, capital of Japan’s Aichi prefecture, with the exact dates yet to be announced. Tsuda will officially assume the position on August 1, 2017.

The 43-year-old journalist is the representative director of internet activism group Movements for Internet Active Users and a professor at Waseda University’s faculty of letters. He is also the author of multiple books, including Tweet & Shout and Using the Web to Influence Politics.

Tsuda was chosen by a panel consisting of seven academics, namely: Tohoku University Graduate School professor Taro Igarashi, Kyoto City University of Arts professor Akiko Kasuya, Tama Art University president Akira Tatehata, the National Museum of Art Osaka chief curator Yasuyuki Nakai, Yamaguchi University professor Fujikawa Satoshi, Nagoya City University professor Mikako Mizuno, and Tama Art University professor Chihiro Minato—the artistic director of the previous triennial.

Commenting on his appointment, Tsuda expressed interest in interrogating the power of art and journalism, as well as coming up with a program that crosses boundaries and connects the known and the unknown.

The triennial is currently in its fourth iteration, with its inaugural edition held in 2010. The last edition in 2016 was titled “Homo Faber: A Rainbow Caravan” and featured over 100 participating artists from 38 countries and regions.

According to the Biennial Foundation, the Aichi Triennale aims “to realize a community-friendly triennial exhibition representing the culture of Aichi/Nagoya, and to make the exhibition a unique outlet of art that attracts international attention.”
