Asian Cultural Council Names 2019 China And Hong Kong Fellows

On June 5, the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) announced the 12 recipients of the 2019 China and Hong Kong Fellowships, which provide financial support to artists, curators, and scholars in the arts and humanities for professional development and cultural exchange.
Among the ACC 2019 China cohort are Nikita Cai, the chief curator of Guangzhou’s Times Museum, and Beijing-based independent curator Chen Li, who plan to use their ACC-Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation Fellowships to undertake research projects in the United States. Shanghai-based sculptor and installation artist Yu Ji received the ACC Cai Guo-Qiang Fellowship, while artist duo Birdhead were awarded the Hong Kong Arts Circle Fellowship. Three of the six Hong Kong fellows are well-known visual artists in the port city, including painter and installation artist Au Hoi Lam, who received the HKETONY-ACC Fellowship; as well as interdisciplinary artist Enoch Cheng and new-media artist Lau Ho Chi, who were both granted Altius Fellowships.
Each year, the fellows are selected by ACC Hong Kong director Josephine Wai and ACC director of programs Cecily Cook, in consultation with fellowship program alumni, experts in relevant fields, and ACC colleagues. Fellowship applicants are chosen based on their professional and artistic merit and creative potential; the proposal's timeliness and contribution to the exchange country; and "the impact of the fellowship on advancing international dialogue and bringing about a transformative effect on the applicant’s life and career," according to ACC.
The nonprofit ACC was founded in 1963 in New York by Amerian philanthropist John D. Rockefeller III. It has supported more than 600 arts professionals and institutions in Mainland China and Hong Kong.
