On November 26, the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) in Adelaide appointed Jason Smith as its new director, replacing Rhana Devenport who ended her six-year tenure in July. Smith, who is currently director of Geelong Gallery in Victoria, will relocate to South Australia and assume his new role at AGSA in February 2025.

Smith brings more than 25 years of experience in visual arts curation and leadership across major galleries in Victoria and Queensland. His previous roles in Melbourne include: curator of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Victoria from 1997–2007; director of Monash Gallery of Art from 2007–08; and director and CEO of Heide Museum of Modern Art from 2008–14. Additionally, he was the curatorial manager of Australian art at Brisbane’s Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art from 2014–16.

In a press release, Smith stated: “I regard it as a particular privilege to be asked to lead the ongoing development of one of the nation’s most acclaimed art collections, and to oversee the scholarship and innovations of AGSA’s thought-provoking exhibitions program.”
