The second edition of Tokyo Gendai, presented by SMBC Group and organised by The Art Assembly, will take place at PACIFICO Yokohama from July 5–7, 2024 (VIP Preview and Vernissage on July 4). The fair will offer diverse presentations by 70 leading galleries from 18 countries, along with an expanded public program for this year, including talks, installations, satellite events and an art workshop for kids, celebrating cultural exchange between Japan, Asia, and beyond.

Leading international gallery Pace (New York, London, Seoul, Geneva, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Tokyo), participating in Tokyo Gendai with a solo presentation devoted to Robert Longo, will also be opening a gallery in the Japanese capital this year, while exhibiting French gallery Ceysson & Bénétière (Saint-Étienne, Paris, Lyon, Luxembourg, Geneva, New York, Panéry, Tokyo) will open its first Asian location and 8th gallery space in Tokyo this Autumn. 

New galleries will join the fair this year, including Galerie EIGEN + ART (Leipzig, Berlin), Gallery EXIT (Hong Kong), Kwai Fung Hin Art (Hong Kong); alongside returning names such as Almine Rech (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Shanghai, Monaco), BLUM (Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo), Perrotin (Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Seoul, Shanghai, Los Angeles), Sadie Coles HQ (London), Taka Ishii Gallery (Tokyo, Kyoto, Maebashi) and SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (Tokyo). 

Additionally, exhibiting galleries include Tang Contemporary’s (Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, Bangkok) presentation of bronze sculptures by renowned Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, who is famous for his conceptual artworks that challenge authority and explore the links between the contemporary world and traditional Chinese culture. Elsewhere, SPURS Gallery (Beijing) will curate a group exhibition featuring six artists including Anselm Reyle, one of Germany’s leading contemporary artists who is well known for his large-scale, ultra-refined abstract paintings, sculptures and elaborate installations with neon elements. Meanwhile, Each Modern (Taipei) will present a group show titled Writings as the Universe, featuring works that are layered, dynamic, complex, and constantly evolving.

The public program includes Tsubomi ‘Flower Bud,’ an exhibition spotlighting four women artists; IntoArt, a new series of art workshops for children; Art Talks, a talks programme with thought leaders from the art world; large-scale installations as part of Sato ‘Meadow;’ and showcases from renowned local institutions as part of Ne ‘Root.’ The programme complements the world-class showcase of international contemporary art brought together by 70 galleries from across the world. 

Following its successful debut last year, Tsubomi ‘Flower Bud’ this year showcases works by four women artists of different nationalities, generations and cultural identities, reflecting on our relationship with civilisations and the natural environment. The exhibition, titled ALL THINGS ARE DELICATELY INTERCONNECTED, will be co-curated by Marina Amada, a Paris and Kyoto-based contemporary art curator and Co-Founder of SPECTRUM, and Soojung Yi, Curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea. Artists include: Jenny Holzer from SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (Tokyo), Mika Tajima from TARO NASU (Tokyo), Miya Ando from Sundaram Tagore Gallery (New York, Singapore, London), and Sareena Sattapon from SAC Gallery (Bangkok). 

New for 2024, Tokyo Gendai will present IntoArt, a series of daily workshops for children led by artists who are exhibiting at Tokyo Gendai. Organised by Gotoschool Inc., a company focused on inclusive education for children, there will also be a corner where children can freely use various art materials, as well as an area where art books and videos can be accessed.

Art Talks, the fair’s talks programme that centres engaging conversations around contemporary art, will feature eight discussions about key trends, topics and developments in today’s art world, with thought leaders from the art world and beyond, including Alexander S. C. Rower (President of the Calder Foundation), Marc Glimcher (CEO of Pace Gallery), Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Museum), Miwa Taguchi (Co-founder of Taguchi Art Collection), Eriko Kimura (Director, Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art), Pedro Erber (Professor, Waseda University), Ritsue Mishima (Artist), and Jun Ishida (GQ JAPAN Head of Editorial Content).

Sato ‘Meadow’ will feature four large-scale, tailored installations around the fair, offering dynamic and diverse works that encourage the viewer to engage with the work. The featured artists include Kishio Suga from Tomio Koyama Gallery (Tokyo), Udomsak Krisanamis, from GALLERY SIDE 2 (Tokyo), Yuichiro E Tamura from KOTARO NUKAGA (Tokyo), and Kengo Kito from MtK Contemporary Art (Kyoto).

The fair will also include Ne ‘Root,’ which presents several leading local foundations hosting special showcases of their work. Participating foundations include Odawara Art Foundation, Fukutake Foundation, Foundation Yoshii, The Obayashi Foundation, CADAN: Contemporary Art Dealers Association Nippon.
