In the halls of the massive COEX convention center in Seoul, the temporary home of the Korean International Art Fair (KIAF) and Frieze Seoul, the main topic of conversation was not fatigue in the art market or its visitors, but rather the largest divorce settlement in the country’s history. The gossip wasn’t random chitchat drawn from local society pages, but involved SK Group’s chairman Chey Tae-won and Roh So-young, the founder and director of the respected Art Center Nabi, who until late May was his wife of 36 years. This past May, the court ruled that Chey must pay Roh a settlement of USD 1 billion, and further ordered that Chey’s mistress, Kim Hee-young, who may have gotten her feet wet in art (first at Jeju’s Podo Museum and more recently at T&C Foundation), pay the estranged wife KRW 2 billion (USD 1.5 million) in compensation for her involvement in the breakdown of the family. In an act of retribution, another Seoul court ruled that Art Center Nabi had to vacate its space in SK Group’s headquarters.
