Welcome to M+! Welcome to our brutalist, secular Temple of Culture! Oh my word—OMG!—what is this giant crucifix doing here?! “In the beginning was the Word . . . and the Word was God” didn’t they say? “OH YEAH! / 噢耶!” reads the flashing text, sardonically rendered in eclectic English and Chinese fonts, flickering across and down the five LED monitors arranged like a crucifix. Voices rejoice—“OH YEAH!”—and reverberate around the concrete-walled space where Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries’ 17-minute video installation is suspended, forming a chorus of excitement and exclamation, an ecstatic affirmation of being alive, carried forth in a phrase repeated over and over again.
