Though the threats of disease, natural disasters, and widespread dissent have drawn attention to the fragile foundations of organized societies, we still prize civilization’s fruits, including the cutting-edge technologies that prolong and improve our lives. In her suite of videos, paintings, installations, and performances, Pink Slime Caesar Shift (2015–19), Jen Liu proposes one of humanity’s greatest scientific advancements, our ability to manipulate DNA, as a solution to one of civilization’s age-old problems: the exploitation of people.
