New Delhi: Churning of the World

SUDHIR PATWARDHAN, Departure, 2020, pastel on paper, 46

A tumultuous year around the world, 2020 began in New Delhi amid citywide #anticaa (or #anticab) protests against the passage of the Citizen (Amendment) Act (CAA) on December 11, 2019, and the associated National Register of Citizens. Part of the right-wing Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government’s anti-Muslim agenda, the CAA and register have been widely criticized for discriminating on the basis of religion, particularly for the law’s exclusion of Muslim refugees from becoming citizens, leaving them potentially stateless and held in detention centers.
