In 2004, an urban planner with a passion for pottery, Theaster Gates, spent a year studying ceramics in Tokoname, Japan. In the two decades since, he has found echoes of sub-cultural resistance in both Japanese folk crafts (mingei) and African American creative practices, leading him to imagine a “creative ideology” that he calls “Afro-Mingei.”
