“If you come, you’re a Shenzhener,” is the official slogan of a city that for 45 years has been the calling card of China’s Special Economic Zones. The warm, southern metropolis is the youngest in the country, and arguably one of the most diverse: according to the last census, the average age is 32.5, and over 60 percent of its 17.66 million population are migrants. Despite the city being surrounded by Cantonese-speaking people from Guangzhou and Hong Kong, Shenzhen’s influx of migrants has positioned Mandarin (with inflections of various dialects) as its official language. Additionally, Shenzhen’s advancement in technology and manufacturing has ensured a strong GDP (much like Beijing and Shanghai), and the city’s container port ranks as the world’s fourth busiest, highlighting its significance in global trade and logistics. This youthfulness, rapid development, and economic vitality have transformed Shenzhen into one of the core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
