When non-residents imagine the culture of Brunei Darussalam, they most likely picture serene mosques, the stilt houses of water villages, and eating family meals on a woven bamboo mat. Conversely, those who call Brunei home feel in their bodies the complex nuances that make up the country’s culture. This is important to consider when discussing the art scene within the heart of Borneo—though thriving, the artists here face the conundrum of being overlooked.
