Change can be bumpy, even at big institutions. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA)’s director Youn Bum-mo faced scrutiny over an audit report in January before he resigned on April 18 under pressure for his political affiliations with the previous president. In mid-September, Youn Bum-mo’s replacement was announced: Kim Sung-hee, the former executive director and cofounder of the nonprofit CAN Foundation.

Other leadership changes can bring new vitality to an organization. At the end of Larys Frogier’s ten-year tenure, Shanghai’s private Rockbund Art Museum named X Zhu-Nowell, formerly at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim, as artistic director and promoted former deputy director Liu Yingjiu to director. In February, curator and art historian Pi Li moved across Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour from M+ to be the new head of art at Tai Kwun Contemporary, with Tobias Berger transitioning to curator at large. In March, director and chief curator of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum Mami Kataoka announced that she will be helming the new National Center for Art Research.
