Recognition was abundant as organizations attempted to get back to the new normal. South Korea’s highest cultural honor, the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, was bestowed on Dansaekhwa pioneer Park Seo-Bo. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) gave the 2020 Korea Artist Prize to Paris-based Lee Seulgi, and the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series commission went to artist duo Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, who debuted their new film installation in September. Beijing-based filmmaker Hao Jingban and Filipino choreographer Eisa Jocson received the 2021 SeMA-Hana Media Art Award for their works at the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale. Hyundai Motor Group’s 4th VH Award named Lawrence Lek its Grand Prix winner for the virtual-reality work Black Cloud (2021), while Ryu Sung-sil became the 19th Hermès Foundation Missulsang laureate.
