Highlights from Art Central 2017

After a gloomy, rainy weekend in Hong Kong, the sunshine brought a much-welcomed relief to the city as it entered into its most active art week of the year. On March 20, Art Central officially kicked off Hong Kong Art Week with its First Night opening evening. Now in its third edition, the fair has established itself as the spirited alternative to the long-standing Art Basel Hong Kong, which will open its doors to the public later in the week in Wanchai at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Last year the younger fair attracted more than 32,000 visitors, building its reputation with a strong selection of exhibitors presenting both established and emerging artists. For its 2017 edition, Art Central has brought more than 100 galleries from around the world with the majority based in Asia. Located in the heart of Hong Kong, the fair transformed the Central Harbourfront with a luminously white, sprawling, bespoke tent, which housed the galleries that were divided into two sectors “Central” and “Rise”—the former section consisting of distinguished galleries, while the latter focusing on newer galleries presenting works by up-and-coming artists. Across this spectrum, both sectors showcased work in a variety of mediums, including ink, photography, painting, sculpture and video.
