Field Trip: Seoul

Since mid-September, South Korea has been abuzz with biennials: in Gwangju, Busan, Daegu and Seoul itself. At the same time, galleries and nonprofit spaces were taking advantage of the international attention to put their best exhibitions on view.

On a tour of the capital, the Seoul Museum of Art is hosting its biannual Mediacity Seoul, titled “Spell on You” and co-curated by Jinsang Yoo and Yukiko Shikata. In the gallery district of Jongno, Artsonje Center has organized a compact survey of Lee Bul’s practice, while, nearby, Kukje has done the same for Kimsooja in two of their spaces. South of the Han River was the Korea International Art Fair (KIAF), and Atelier Hermès—true Gangnam style—hosted three artists nominated for its annual award.
