Field Trip: Mongolia

Over the course of four days in August, ArtAsiaPacific visited Ulaanbaatar at the tail end of its brief summer, just before the start of its long and cold winter season. Though it is the cultural, industrial and financial center of the country, Ulaanbaatar is surrounded by rolling mountains—which can be viewed from within the city—and is but an hour away from the steppes. The growing city is a mixture of the old and contemporary: Communist-era buildings, and even yurts (or ger in Mongolian), can be seen alongside shiny modern buildings and billboards advertising the latest fashionable product.
