Book Blog: Misaki Kawai

A trip to Printed Matter is always charged with the expectation of finding a sweet reward. No surprise then, when we happened across Secret Scrap, a low-tech string-bound collection of papers and illustrations by Misaki Kawai

Share in our delight!

Yes! I do want to see what’s beneath this cover. All photographs by Alis Atwell for ArtAsiaPacific.

Misaki paints in her Brooklyn home and studio, which is why some of these scraps hold thick layers of acrylics. I’m guessing these snippets are straight from the studio floor.

Each of the 6 sheets, folded into a 24 page signature, create a shifting pastel backdrop for the playful spatial arrangements of scrap and drawing.

Though an edition of 50, Printed Matter had only a handful of Secret Scrap on display. The unique back cover was our final reason for choosing number 21. The red square is felt!
