As part of her research for the 21st Biennale of Sydney, artistic director Mami Kataoka has initiated a number discussions with artists, curators and practitioners who have contributed to or witnessed the biennial’s evolution over its 45-year history. In Biennale Archive Stories #5, Kataoka had a conversation with curator and writer Judy Annear; former curatorial director of Art Gallery of New South Wales, Anthony Bond; as well as architect and contemporary art collector Penelope Seidler. The four figures assessed how the nature of the biennial and its cultural life has transformed over the years, discussing in depth previous editions of the biennial, including the experimental practices that manifested in the eighth edition in 1990, whose exhibition was managed by Annear, and the curatorial strategy of bricolage that brought Western and non-Western artworks together in the ninth iteration helmed by Bond in 1992 and '93.
