Americans may have heard of Baghdad’s Al Rasheed Hotel in reference to its “Bush Sr. doormat,” a slight that made headlines during the Gulf War. The hotel really did once feature former president George HW Bush’s face on the floor of the entrance, forcing visitors to tread across it, but the Al Rasheed’s callousness predates this debasing mosaic. Located at the center of Baghdad’s International Zone, the hotel was built to host the 1982 summit of the Non-Aligned Movement; and, if the rumors are true, was fully furnished with two-way mirrors, allowing Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to surveil resident journalists and diplomats.
