Masochistic Sainthood: Dew Kim

While the pursuit of pleasure often drives the quest for power and the creation of art, sexual pleasure manifests itself in more unconventional ways, including the giving and receiving of pain. While these pursuits are frequently labeled as “deviant” or “perverse,” for others the concept of suffering-induced satisfaction extends well beyond the sexual realm and into the sphere of religion, where pain and sacrifice are viewed, in some quarters, as the true path to spiritual enlightenment. It is at this juncture between religious obedience and masochism that the work of Korean artist Dew Kim lies.
